Why this idea works
Every driveway is going to crack somewhere as the concrete shrinks; the only question is whether you decide where. Broad panels with a planned joint grid put those breaks on straight lines you chose, so the surface stays quiet and legible instead of wandering. Squared, generous panels also suit a modern facade, letting the architecture and the paving agree.

- Large panels create a quiet surface, but the slab section limits their size. The joint plan has to lead the visual pattern.

- Conceptual range: measure the parking and approach area as one rectangle, then the garage apron and any street tie-in as separate pieces.

A light broom texture across the field gives tires grip in rain and hides tire marks better than a slick trowel, while the saw cuts carry the geometry. Keep the panels close to square, with the long side no more than about one and a half times the short side, so no single bay is set up to crack across its middle.
- Space the control joints for the slab thickness, roughly 24 to 36 times the thickness in inches converted to feet, and keep each panel near square.
- Slope the whole surface gently away from the garage doors so rain and snowmelt never pool at the thresholds.
- Place an isolation joint where the drive meets the garage slab so the two move independently.

How wide should control-joint panels be on a driveway?
A common starting point is a joint spacing in feet of about two to three times the slab thickness in inches, kept to roughly 15 feet at most and to panels near square. Confirm the spacing against your actual slab section rather than treating any rule as final.
Why do broad panels look more finished?
Fewer, larger, squared panels give the eye a simple rhythm and let the joints read as design, while many small or irregular bays look busy and invite random cracking. The panel layout is doing structural and visual work at once.
