Sonotube Calculator

Estimate concrete, bags, ordering, and rebar-cage materials for a round pier or post.

Round piers and posts

Calculate concrete for a cylindrical form

Enter the inside diameter and concrete height for one round pier. The calculator uses the cylinder formula, π × radius² × height, then applies the selected waste allowance. Results include cubic feet and cubic yards, common bag sizes, ready-mix guidance, rough cost, and an optional closed-tie or spiral cage material estimate. Use the quantity field to total concrete, bags, and cost for multiple identical piers in one estimate, or calculate different pier sizes separately.

Use the specified concrete shape, not the auger size

A tube form creates a uniform cylinder. Bell bottoms, flared bases, oversized holes, soil overbreak, and concrete placed below the tube add volume that the basic cylinder does not include. If the detail includes a separate pad or enlarged base, calculate that volume separately. For several piers, allow for realistic placement loss without automatically multiplying a large waste percentage into every unit.

Pier diameter, depth, bearing, reinforcement, post connection, and frost protection are design decisions. The ZIP step can provide state-level frost-line guidance, but the required bearing depth must be verified locally. Rebar cage output is a planning takeoff based on entered bar count, tie size, spacing, and cover; it is not a structural design.

Sonotube calculator FAQ

How much concrete fills a 12-inch Sonotube 4 feet deep?

A 12-inch-diameter cylinder 4 feet high contains about 3.14 cubic feet, or 0.116 cubic yard before waste. With 5%, the planning amount is about 0.122 cubic yard.

Can I estimate concrete for multiple identical piers at once?

Yes. Enter the number of identical piers in the quantity field and the calculator totals concrete volume, bags, cost, and cage materials automatically. All piers must share the same diameter, height, and base shape. Calculate different sizes or enlarged bases separately.
